Big Box Business Structure
Currently, most retail Big Box business structures necessitate that every associate and manager is part of almost all processes in the store, part of every step in the same process, and / or part of random combinations of these processes. This burdens stores, and creates confusion for associates and customers leading to defects, and loss of sales. Traditionally, stores and processes were designed around distinct functional departments, which prevented rendering customers’ requirements into deliverables via sustained processes and optimal use of stores’ resources. This is complicated by the fact that traditional departments have invisible boundaries, which causes fragmentation that could jeopardize corporate initiatives at store level.
So, what is the solution for this problem? An anonymous once said: “For every problem there is a solution that is simple, neat - and wrong.” However, I propose structuring stores around new processes that deliver solutions instead of existing current structure where processes are designed around traditional independent departments that deliver products and services. How? Well, it depends on each particular situation!
